The pair of dishes potted with shallow rounded sides, rising from a short slightly tapered foot to a flared rim, the interior with white glaze, inscribed with six-character mark ‘geshiyisuoyaqi’ in blue and white glaze, the exterior with persimmon glaze, decorated upon which with scene of birds and brunches in white glaze, the base with white glaze, inscribed with a six-character mark ‘wanlijiachennianzhi (made during the 17th year of Wanli reign)’ within double circles.
This pair of dishes is extreme rare, for the natural and elegant depiction on the exterior full of literati’s interest, and also the accurate date on the base(1604).The pair of dishes is probably production of the highest quality of non-Imperial kilns in the late Ming Dynasty, during which the demand for the porcelains by the upper class is growing. With almost the same quality as the production of the imperial court, porcelains made from these non-imperial kilns are endowed with literati’s’ taste, and most of the products of same situation have no mark.
